Pan's Labyrinth

This afternoon I was not willing to continue my work on Asp.Net and rather thought of watching this movie:Pan's Labyrinth.I got this from the external hard drive of one of my friends.So,the whole name read like this:Pan's Labyrinth(IMDB rank 47).It was like putting the advertisement along with the product!!!Anyway that worked and out of 13 movies currently on my lappy I decided to finish this one.
The story started as guessed in a fairytale like atmosphere telling about a princess who wanted a beautiful world (world for humans) long long years ago.She escapes from her domain of heaven to see the real beauty of the earth.On earth she is inflicted by diseases,cold etc and she dies.The king ,hearing the loss of her daughter pledges that he will wait for her to return and as it was a movie she returns ... in the era of Hitler!The film takes you to the time of German invasion of Spain.The story is beautifully balanced between an out and out violent movie(a lot of blood shed and in a very abhorring manner...a scene where the german captain kills an innocent strinking the bottom of a wine bottle onto his nose at a stretch till it breaks and the bone churns down...is really thows a chill in spine) and a fairytale woven around the cute little Ofelia who was the dead princess.The two different kinds of story move together and both keep you deeply involved.The film scores on all areas:storyline,visual effects,performances etc.One particular scene that I liked a lot is when Ofelia's mother, who was expecting a child, falls terribly sick and the german captain Vidal who was her husband(2nd one) asks the doctor that if he has to choose between the mother and his "Son" save the child.Ofelia was under the bed at that time and hearing this,she gets very terrified.After the captain left the room she puts her head on her mother's belly(who was sedated that time) and talks to her brother:
Brother!
Little Brother!
If you can hear me...things out here aren't too good.But soon you'll have to come out
You have made mama very sick.I want to ask you one favor..when you come out.Just one.Don't hurt her.You'll meet her.She is very preety.Even though she is sad for days at a time,You'll see when she smiles you'll love her.
Listen if you do what I say,I'll make you a promise.I'll take you to my kingdom and make you a prince.I promise you,a prince.

Captain Vidal,Mercedes and the doctor are few of the characters whom you ll appreciate besides Ofelia.Obviously Vidal for his negative and cruel character which he played really well.SO this is a movie with fairies and bandits both at the same time.The movie is really good.What's more it has got 96% Freshness on Rotten Tomatoes Critics Tomatometer
